Many businesses risk jeopardising the health of their IT systems by using pirated web hosting software, it has been reported.
A study conducted by .net magazine indicates that 59 per cent of IT professionals have used illegal programme copies during the course of their working lives.
However, Dan Oliver, editor of the publication, said this can prove to be a false economy if the technology problems start mounting up for users.
"With tight deadlines, and tighter budgets, it's understandable - though clearly not recommended - to hear of people being asked to use pirated software," he stated.
"It's unrealistic to put the onus on employees, the message needs to get through to employers."
Last month, the Direct Marketing Association warned web-based businesses and email marketing providers in particular to ensure they take all necessary IT security provisions.
The organisation said the protection of consumer information should be treated as a priority at all times.
